A memory footprint comparison:
LXDE wins the lightweight contest hands down. Now, it is time for the Xfce community to get back in the game.

Isn’t that because LXDE contains a lot less? If you want a task manager, CD burner, web browser, mixer/volume, media player, calendar, and more you have to install them separately with LXDE.
Though, you may have been taking that into account. Also, I like LXDE’s modularity; it has so fewer dependencies.
The media player is a skinned xmms and of course there is a task manager.
CD burner and Web Browser are applications.
LXDE’s strength is its design: modular and simple.
